Drilling a borehole requires some research and planning. At LJ Drilling, we get many calls from end-users asking us for help on how to go about boreholes. We want to answer some of the most common questions we get asked. We trust that the answers will help to make the borehole process as smooth as possible for you and that they’ll help you to get the best return on your investment.
Did you know that if groundwater use falls under Schedule 1, no permission is required. As part of the new allocation system incorporated into the NWA, a land owner, or legal occupier of the land, has a right to reasonable use of water taken from an aquifer on that property.
This “reasonable use” is defined in Schedule 1 to NWA as:
- Reasonable domestic use in that person’s household’
- Small gardening not for commercial purposes’;
- The watering of animals (excluding feedlots) which graze on that land within the grazing capacity of that land’.
Schedule 1 water uses do not require any permission or registration. Although an upper limit for Schedule 1-uses has not been set in the NWA, a catchment management agency may in terms of item 2(e) of Schedule 3 limit the taking of water under Schedule 1. For the purpose of applying these provisions, it is assumed that if a person uses more than 10 kiloliters of groundwater per day (10 000 litres/day) for a ‘non-commercial small garden’, then they are exceeding the limits of Schedule 1, and the water use should be registered.
IS BOREHOLE WATER SAFE TO DRINK?
Usually, borehole water is perfectly safe to drink. However, we always recommend carrying out a water analysis test by a reputable labaratory to fully understand the contents of the water.
WHERE CAN I PUT A BOREHOLE?
As long as there is sufficient space on your site or property to construct the borehole you can just about put a borehole anywhere. There are practical decisions to be made in connection with this, e.g. where do you want the water, where can the above-ground pumping infrastructure be housed, where is power available etc. As part of our specification and quotation, we will visit the site to assist you in determining if there is sufficient space for the borehole and the best location to construct it. A water survey is very important to pinpoint the water breaks underground, to maximize the chances of finding good water volumes.
HOW LONG WILL A BOREHOLE LAST?
A well-constructed borehole can last many generations. We regularly encounter boreholes from the 1950s, 60′s and 70′s that are still in full working order. Modern technology has also meant that newly constructed boreholes can last even longer due to advancements in borehole lining material and drilling techniques to prevent the borehole from collapsing.
CAN BOREHOLE WATER DRY UP?
Boreholes are drilled beyond the water table to ensure that is not affected by seasonal differences and to allow for drought years. For the borehole to dry up or become affected by lack of water there would have to be a drought for several years.
